Webster Stanley Middle School PALs The Rotary Club of Oshkosh – Morning hosted a 6th Grade Essay Contest at our PAL (Partners at Learning), Webster Stanley Middle School fourth quarter. This year’s topic was “The 4-Way Test.” The entire 6th grade class competed in the essay contest by writing about one of the following topics; “Describe a situation you witnessed that would have ended differently if the 4-Way Test had been applied.” Or; “Describe how the 4-Way Test would help you make good choices in your life.” The teachers selected the top 10 essays, and the members of the Oshkosh Morning Rotary voted on the top three. Club Treasurer Roberta Messer said, “The students put a lot of thought into the essays…they really got it.” At the June 8th Webster Stanley 6th Grade Awards Ceremony immediate Past President Kathy Murphy and Secretary Stan Kline presented the winners with certificates and awards: 1st Place ($100) Emily Rahn, 2nd Place ($75) Addie Schmitz, and 3rd Place ($50) Alison Rau. The top 10 writers each received a Rotary coin with the tenets of the “4-Way Test” inscribed on it. The ten essay finalists pictured at left above are: L-R, back row: Sydney Burns, Adaw Deng, Steven Domiter, Emily Rahn, Addie Schmitz, Alison Rau. L-R front row: John (Jack) Sitter, Trevor Schulte, Dawson Freiberg, Mac Dumke. “We could not have been more impressed by the quality and insightful essays,” said Ryan Ames, 2010-2011 Club President. The Morning Rotary Club plans to continue with the yearly essay contest at Webster Stanley Middle School in an effort to engage the students and to give them topics that will help them form their own world image and the importance of civic responsibility.
Morning Rotary is helping Webster Stanley MS students with CANSTRUCTION, a food drive and sculpture contest combined. Students collect cans of food and build a structure using the cans. Morning Rotary will be supplying canned goods and other help as needed. Architects from Ganther Construction have designed a huge piano to be made of 3,000 cans. Participating local schools will assemble their structures and compete against each for prizes. All canned goods will be donated to area food pantries following the competition in November.
Webster Stanley Middle School students held a food drive in December 2009. The students chose to donate the food they collected to the Salvation Army. Morning Rotary Club members provided the transportation of the boxes and boxes of canned goods to the Salvation Army food pantry for the students.
The officers from Webster Stanley Student Council attended a Morning Rotary Club meeting with their advisor and school principal. They told club members of various activities they were doing at school. One of the projects is to catch fellow classmates doing something good and reporting it to the office. Gift certificates and other items are awarded to those who get "caught". Morning Rotary contributed restaurant gift certificates to be used for awards.
